Chilton Auto Repair Manual
Chilton: From what I remember, long on specs and procedures, short on pictures and illustrations. Expectation is that you are already thoroughly familiar with automotive maintenance procedures and specialty tools.
Haynes: Based on a 'tear down and rebuild' of a particular vehicle. Lots of pictures and illustrations.
Somewhat confusing to follow as some standard procedures are mentioned once (and only once) and instructions in other sections will refer you back or forward in the manual as part of the particular procedure you're trying to follow. Hasn't had much luck getting to publish proprietary information from some auto manufacturers. Standard boilerplate warnings about problems that should 'not be attempted by the home mechanic'.
A lot more attempts than with Chilton to explain how and why certain procedures need to be done a certain way. Target audience is the reasonably talented DIY mechanic who can follow what is essentially a recipe book. Occasional typos. (I broke a bolt on a Dodge brake caliper because the torque setting in the manual was 88 ft-lbs when it should have read 38 ft-lbs) Chilton is good if you have a knowledgeable friend, as it can serve as a guidebook while the both of you labor away on your automechanical quest. Also quite usefull if you are already an automechanic who wants to 'brush up' on a particular procedure for a particular year and model of vehicle.
Haynes is for 'ages 3 and up'. That is, shadetree mechanics who have been messing around with minor procedures and are looking to up their game. Focus on a particular model for a limited number of production years means it is nearly as comprehensive as Chilton - but only for that vehicle! For what it's worth, I've had a Haynes manual for 11 of the 13 cars I've owned.
