Nucleus Pos Manual
Hey everyone, i wasn't really sure where to post this but here goes nothing. I have here an IBM 4840 563. Its an old PoS from a previous business that includes the computer, a touch screen monitor, a printer, and a cash drawer.

Im trying to use it for my personal business but I'm using a cloud based PoS and need to install windows. It has 'windows xp embedded' which i really don't know much about, booting up it attempts to load their previous os they had on some server. I made a bootable usb using rufus, as it has no disc drive, and was trying to use xp sp3. When i get to the menu asking to hit a key to boot usb, it pauses a bit, then restarts every time. Ive tried multiple usb slots, remaking the the bootable usb, ive looked around in the bios but dont really know what too look. Im stumped:/ any help would be appreciated.

I managed to find the service manual. It says it support xp? That was a ton of info, thanks this thing did come with another computer just like it, which i have, and also what appears to be a server.
Idk much about them but when i boot the server it seems to run some sort of OS called nucleus or whatever. It looks like great pos software if i could put it all together but the OS is locked because i dont have the user info. So i was just hoping to use the terminals themselves with the hardware they have. I have some spare older ram and hdds was even thinking of trying to run 7. I've never tried Linux nor would i be apposed to it, but my over all problem still stands.
Why does it reboot. Is it because it simply cant run sp3? Is it possible that the hdd it has is locked or something? Preventing another os? Idk if they do that lol.
I would suspect the BIOS is special to allow the system only to work with the POS system as originally intended. The system however is low on RAM and for it to boot, you'd need a system that can boot to such a low RAM requirement, otherwise it might just hangup or restart. You need to match the RAM to a system that can work within that RAM amount. That's why I linked you to Mint 13, but looking back I now see it's recommendation is at least 512, so instead for Linux you need to look for a lite version, like.
This will run in 256MB of RAM. Since you also have the server, hook them together, boot the server first, then boot the sales terminal computer and maybe it all will just work, other than you not having the password to server and terminal. There are some password hacks you can try like jellybean or NTpasswd. Google 'password finder' and get plenty of them to check out.
If all that fails, then pop in a linux distro ( ) and try out this POS software I found in my Linux Mint 17 repository. Seems they've changed the name, the homepage listed redirects now to link below, but the software in linux repositories is free. How these systems work is to have a virtual drive on a server.

The thin client, or in your case the POS device, connects to the server and given access to the virtual drive assigned to it. It then uses this vhd (virtual hard drive) that is actually on the server to do all it's tasks. When the thin client is shut down, if it doesn't have storage built into it, then just like removing a LIVE USB or CD, the system disappears from the thin client until it's turned on again and accesses the server which gives it the PXE boot, and then the virtual hd is accessed, and that's where all it's work is stored also.
POS is one application, it's also used a lot for computer classes in schools.
