Competing vehicles include the Subaru Impreza, Honda Civic, Mazda3, Toyota Corolla and Ford Focus. Styles and Pricing Mitsubishi makes the Lancer in five different trim levels: DE, ES, SE, GT, and Ralliart. DE models come with standard features like a trip computer, power windows, power locks, tilt-only steering wheel, automatic headlights, 16-inch steel wheels, and a sound system with four speakers and a CD player.
ES models add to the standard features list with air conditioning, cruise control, upgraded cloth upholstery, chrome exterior trim pieces, keyless entry, front and rear center armrests, 60/40 split folding rear seat, driver’s seat height adjustment, auxiliary audio input jack, and steering wheel audio controls. An optional Alloy Wheel package adds 16-inch alloy wheels, a rear stabilizer bar, and rear disc brakes. SE models come with all-wheel drive, the Alloy Wheel package, and roof rack mounts.
GT models come with essentially everything found on the SE, but have front-wheel drive. They also come with 18-inch alloy wheels, foglights, sport upholstery, foglights, rear spoiler, keyless entry and ignition, automatic climate control, revised front fascia, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter knob, auto-dimming rearview mirror, shifter paddles, color driver info display, Fuse voice-activated electronics interface, Bluetooth connectivity, six speakers, and a USB jack. Ralliart models come with all-wheel drive, hill-start assist, automated dual-clutch manual transmission, sport-tuned suspension, sporty exterior styling, aluminum pedals, upgraded upholstery, and satellite radio. SE models can be outfitted with an optional Premium package that comes with a color display, upgraded door trim pieces, sunroof, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter knob, and a Rockford Fosgate sound system with nine speakers, six-CD changer, and satellite radio. DE and ES models can be outfitted with numerous stand-alone exterior appearance items like chrome exhaust tips, front air dam, and a rear spoiler. GT and Ralliart models can come with a Touring package that adds the Rockford Fosgate sound system, sunroof, xenon headlights, automatic wipers, small rear spoiler, and leather upholstery. Both trims can also be outfitted with a navigation system that comes with a rearview camera and a digital music file storage drive.
A Lancer comes with a factory invoice of about $17,500 for an ES model and an MSRP of about $18,000. The GT trim level adds about $3,200 to the vehicle’s MSRP and the SE adds about another $500. Powertrain DE and ES models come with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that can put out 148 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque. The standard transmission is a five-speed manual, with a continuously variable transmission or CVT is available.
The EPA estimates fuel mileage at 26 mpg city, 34 mpg highway and 29 mpg combined. SE and GT models come with a more powerful 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 168 horsepower and 167 pound-feet of torque. SE models come with the CVT and all-wheel drive standard. GT models come with the five-speed manual transmission and front-wheel drive standard, but a CVT with paddle shifters is available. Fuel mileage is estimated at 23 mpg city, 30 mpg highway, and 26 mpg combined.
Ralliart models come with the most powerful engine in the lineup, a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that makes up to 237 horsepower and 253 pound-feet of torque. An automated dual-clutch manual transmission is standard along with all-wheel drive. Shifter paddles and an active center differential are also standard equipment. Fuel mileage estimates from the EPA are 18 mpg city, 25 mpg highway, and 20 mpg combined. Interior Style and Features The exterior of the Mitsubishi Lancer does not coincide whatsoever with the design of the interior. Instead of featuring an edgy and aggressive look, the Lancer’s interior is more like a flash from the past when economy cars came with loads of cheap, hard plastics on the dash, center console and elsewhere.
The quality of construction is also lacking, with many parts feeling flimsy and unsubstantial. Upper trim levels do come with some padding on the doors and elsewhere, which helps make the interior not feel as cheap.
Surprisingly the front seats are not the most comfortable spot in the car, thanks to a general lack of support (especially at the thighs) in the front seats. The lack of a telescoping feature for the steering wheel also does not help tall or short drivers find a comfortable position to sit. The rear seats feature more padding and support, plus there is a surprising amount of legroom for a compact sedan. The trunk, on the other hand, is surprisingly small with just 11.6 cubic feet of space, but the rear folding seats allow owners to use the backseat for larger items. The Fuse voice-activated electronics interface is a nice feature. The touchscreen comes with difficult navigation, but the voice controls make selecting songs and changing other settings a breeze.
Overall Assessment The Mitsubishi Lancer comes with a wide variety of trim levels. Those on the bottom end are quite cheap-feeling and come with little performance ability. Climbing up the chain of trim levels provides more performance, but the interior still feels cheap and flimsy in comparison to competing vehicles. Performance enthusiasts might be able to look over the interior once they get a taste of the performance from the Ralliart version of the car. Top competing models include the Subaru Impreza, Mazda3, and Ford Focus. They often pick the very base mode trims to review, but with other brands pick higher trim levels to review. I can get more at a better price than from other auto makers. I can pretty much afford to buy most any vehicle I choose having owned a new Corvette and Audi TT in the past ten years.
