09.9.2016 Driver Goes Automatic In 2017 Kenworth T680 On February 19, 2016, I was given one of Stevens new 2017 Kenworth T680 automatics. My old truck was a 2012 Peterbilt 587 which had 487,000mi on it, (237,000 of which I put on it), and almost ready for retirement. Just after Thanksgiving, I started experiencing issues with the turbocharger. From the end of November to February 17th, my truck was at Kenworth or Peterbilt, four times, to replace the turbocharger and other engine sensors which had gone bad. Needless to say, not only I, but Carl, my driver manager, was a little frustrated because the truck was breaking down every few weeks.
We both agreed I needed a new truck and I was routed to Dallas to get one. Before I go on, I need to explain something; I am 49 years old and until I met my wife, (with the exception of driving a school bus), all my cars have been stick. I learned on a stick and I still own a stick. I was not a fan of automatic transmission, so, like our other drivers, I was not happy when I learned we may be going to automatics. Carl told me he and Terry had already talked and a new truck was being held for me. Personally, I thought I would be given another used truck, but, to my surprise, I was given a brand new 2017 T680!
A lot of our drivers have reservations about the automatics, the on-board cameras, the stability control, etc. My perspective; if you are doing what you should be, and driving the way you are expected to, what do you have to hide? I have had my T680 for about two weeks. It was delivered to Stevens on February 18th and given to me on February 19th.
I quickly moved in and have not looked back. Yes, at first I did miss my old truck until I experienced how nice the T680 really is! It is so comfortable and driving it in traffic is a lot less demanding than the 2012 Peterbilt. I had my reservations on an automatic truck, how did it shift and how smooth, is the automatic as durable as the manual, but, I have to admit, I REALLY like this truck! It really is fun to drive and so smooth. From a stop it starts great and it stops really well.
Plus, you can concentrate on driving and traffic and not on downshifting or “what gear should I be in”. I hope other drivers who have automatics are as happy as I am and write about their experiences with their new trucks.
