The New Holland 1409 discbine showed up today at 1pm with the cutter bar drooping in the center after being out mowing soybeans for the day. Turns out that 300 ft-lb torqued bolts with locktite backed off that hold the modules together. After taking it apart, we discover a broken off shaft inside one of the modules and a busted up oil seal. I call the dealer and they have a shaft and new module (good dealer ).
After arriving at the dealer and looking at the parts sheet we see the oil seal is not listed. I get the Chicago-Rawhide part number off the seal and go to the bearing store. After calling SKF and finding out that it is an OEM part number (no info given out ), my rage sets in. So to sum it up. CNH designed a cutter-bar with replaceable modules and then went out of there way to put in custom oil seals (this is the second time I have run into this on this machine ) so that instead of spending $7 on a seal the farmer has to spend $450 on a whole module.
I get it, they don't want you servicing the part. I don't like it, but can live with it.
I don't like that they actively block you by using a custom oil seal for absolutely no good reason. To top it off after getting home from the dealer, the factory oil seal in the module I bought (see pic ) was installed incorrectly. So off for another 2 hour drive to the dealer tomorrow am to get another (I hope ).
