I've read somewhere that Amsoil synthetic (of some type) is supposed to improve shifting on the NV3550, anyone know anything about this? Will a synthetic help shifting?I'm pretty sure the OE stuff was synthetic. Friction modifiers alter the blockers so if you have difficulty shifting INTO gear from across the neutral gate, it's USUALLY because you're fighting with synchros and they're DESIGNED to block your shift until things align. By making the fluid 'grabbier' the synchros will bite better, but wear faster. If, OTOH, you have a hard time shifting OUT of the selected gear back to and through neutral, a different oil might alleviate that. It's not that I'm having difficulty in shifting, it's just that the NV3550 is the classic truck tranny in that is shifts sloppy and makes a lot of noise, especially idling in neutral and I've been hoping that changing to Amsoil synthetic would help it's operation.
My rig has 25K miles on it, and runs very well, no complaints here. I have the Nth 6in LA and all the typical extras. Shifting in and out of gears is typical of the NV3550. I made the mistake of driving a few 06' Rubi's and the tranny on those is much more crisp and accurate. The shift gears are much more precise and positive on the 06's when compared to the older NV3550.

I thought someone had written that changing to Amsoil had markedly improved their shifting on their NV3550. Obviously a lot of it is the shifter itself, and I've also thougth about replacing it with an aftermanrket shifter to improve shifting.
